Dear Gavin,
By way of introduction, my name is Michelle and I am assisting on an exciting research project called 'Bright Lights, Big City?' with Dr. Taylor and Dr. Casey at Newcastle University. I have attached a leaflet for your information. We are looking for individuals to participate in this research and we were hoping that you might be able to pass our details on to anyone connected with 'Northumbrian Windsurfing Club' who you think may be interested in taking part in an interview? We are able to travel to the area and talk to participants at their earliest convenience. Please see our advert below:
‘Bright Lights, Big City?: Transformations and Transitions in Lesbian and Gay socio-spatial sites in the North East’
*
Focusing on Teesside, Newcastle and Northumberland, this research explores the changes in a range of commercial and non-commercial lesbian and gay spaces in the North East. We want to know how both new, ‘up and coming’ and ‘old’ ongoing social spaces are experienced, perhaps changing throughout time and across location ... Are these spaces, venues, locations accessible? Required? Desired? Do you have other ideas of what scene space is, or might look like?
We wish to talk to individuals and groups of people about their experiences of commercial and non-commercial L&G sites in the region, so if you have thoughts on these topics - and are interested in being interviewed - please get in touch with Yvette: Yvette.Taylor@newcastle.ac.uk<mailto:Yvette.Taylor@newcas tle.ac.uk>

Kind Regards,
Michelle

you mean the bunch of blokes he goes mountain biking into the hills with for the day and they all come back with sore arses and smiling faces.
that posting might appeal to the freestylers, they have to be quite bendy apparently.

Perhaps you can post on the kite boarding forum Gavin? I
suspect you'll have more success with those chutney
ferrets, who insist on wearing boardies over full length
wetsuits year round?

Right lads, thanks for your ' valuable' contributions to the discussion, is there any other comments to be made before we close the thread. We've now heard from the negative, anti-L&G sailors i.e. yourselves, but before I reply to Michelle at Newcastle University and in the light of fairness and balanced argument, is there anyone that wants to state a more positive and welcoming side to the windsurfing community's general attitude to L&G's into our community ? Anyone who posted above is obviously ' concerned' about L&G's in our community and this being a public forum, with your permission I'm going to pass on all your comments with contact details to the Uni, and they may contact you to be interviewed. As I stated the University is a customer of mine, and I have a commercial interest, so I'm unable to participate. I will close the thread on Sunday 14th, so if I do not hear otherwise, I'll assume you are ok about me passing on your comments. ..thanks again. .... L&G's = Lesbian & Gay's

you have to expect some traditional north east banter.
laughter is the best medicine.
no permission granted here to "pass on details".
terry, that new wetsuit of yours looks strange, how will you see where you are going, and i get the idea of the air supply wiill be handy for the dbay rinsings you keep getting!
looks like darth vader on his holidays.

Banter is fine in my book but homophobia is not - I thought such ignorant views were held only by certain religions.
However, gay-bashing aside, I think the target audience here is not NWC, as we're not a gay/lesbian-specific website - to quote the original advert: "Focusing on Teesside, Newcastle and Northumberland, this research explores the changes in a range of commercial and non-commercial lesbian and gay spaces in the North East"
Personally I would welcome any gay or lesbian windsurfers to NWC and I'm sure that they would be delighted to meet the bunch of broad-minded sailors who made the above comments. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves and in future keep your comments to your pub conversations or BNP discussion groups or whatever.

I agree with Ross - I dont think we are the "target audience".
but -
I personally neither know nor care whether the people I windsurf with are Gay , Lesbian or anything else for that matter, and I suspect the same goes for everyone else who windsurfs with NWC (despite the comments above). What matters is that they windsurf , you dont even have to be any good (which is handy as anyone who has seen me sail/swim the board back will confirm i aint the best) to be welcomed . You just turn up with a board and you are included
I think windsurfing is truly not concerned with sexual orientation which whilst not being part of the research might make a footnote
