Windsurfing 4 Cancer Research this year will be held on Sunday 2nd May 2010 to mark the start of National Windsurfing Week.

for full details please visit the official website as this has all the charity and registration information.

The days events are open to all wind and muscle powered watersports and you are invited to create your own challenge to raise sponsorship for W4CR who last year exceeded their £25,000 target and this year hope to raise £50,000. Given our late involvement last year I'm sure we can help them on their way to this new target.

Registration on the W4CR website is encouraged and we hope to host the 2010 event at Boulmer Haven, last year we had windsurfing, canoeing and SUP's but as again any wind/water/muscle sport enthusiast can get involved and raise funds to benefit many Cancer related charities, please see their website to see how last years funds were put to good use.

Official merchandise can be purchased here and stickers/streamers will be issued to registered participants.

I have agreed to be venue co-ordinator at Boulmer and hope to see many of you at the Haven for fun, fundraising and cakes!

Please feel free to register your interest and for more information visit the W4CR website or their group on Facebook.

We have already matched last years registered participants (2) and Mad Mike will be doing so shortly, increasing our registration this year by 50%, great news!

It would be good to gain Bronze staus for the venue but for that we would need 5 registered participants from any eligable sport???????????

I've stuck my free sail sticker on the back of my van to help promote the event so will need to buy some more for my sails on the day, only £2 each from the W4CR website.

Tides on the 2nd May look to be High at Sunrise and Low just after Midday so that would make for a great afternoon at the Haven, unless there are any takers to register for a Sunrise Sail??????

If you can't join the Northumbrian Windsurfing Club at Boulmer on the 2nd then you may like to visit Derwent Reservoir Sailing Club, they are also hosts as a venue for W4CR on that day and raising funds for the charity.

If you would like more information or are able to display a poster advertising the Boulmer event then please feel free to contact me via a PM

At last years event at sunrise (5:20) there was a yacht circling beyond the reef (see photos 12 & 13 in the gallery) with a light atop the mast.

Does anyone know who this was?

or just a passing ship looking to anchor?

It was there for a good while but had gone by the time we had the canoes out at the reef.

All vessels welcome at Boulmer Haven, May 2nd.

Martin,

I will be there as early as I can but it probably won't be until the afternoon as I am at a wedding the day before.  I am on nights from 7pm though so wont be able to hang around until the end I'm afraid. Its been so long since I have been able to sail that having lots of people/rescuers there would be a bonus.  I have completed half the registration on the W4CR website but am at work so can't access my hotmail to complete it until tomorrow. See you there.

Excellent news Rob,

unless you've been through the 'registration' process you feel a little daunted by it,

all they ask is for you to try and predict how much you can realistically raise in sponsorship or 'pledge' to the charity, any amount is much appreciated!

As for the day of the 2nd, I will be there from sunrise, with hopefully most people dropping by at some point in the afternoon.

Thanks Rob that means we are well on the way to achieve Bronze status.

I will be there as early as possible.  I will have a word with a mate from 202 Sqn to see if he is able to do a fly by at some point during the day. Good for the kids if there are some there.

We now have 3 registered sailors for Boulmer on the 2nd and have reached in excess of £250 pledged by those 3, we have achieved Bronze status for the pledges but need 2 more registered sailors to gain full Bronze status for the venue.

I have been asked to place an order for anyone wishing to buy stickers/tee shirts/Musto W4CR caps, if you want to buy any I can order them and have them for you at the beach on the 2nd. Please see their website for details of what's available.

I know some of you have already indicated you will be in attendance and I have put a few posters/notices in places where they could generate non NWC interest, so weather permitting we can have as good a day as last year,

if not better!

More details to follow

Peter,
I will be setting up a JustGiving site as there have been many such questions even from an expat Boulmer Seal now residing in New Zealand.

Nikki,
there are a few official campsites, at Proctors Stead nr Craster and one nr Embleton, also at the rugby field at Alnwick. We will be unofficially camping at Boulmer itself, to be on the water at sunrise!

All,
Sailing (dependant on conditions on the day) is likely to take place in the morning and in the afternoon with a break for a BBQ at lunchtime (when there will be no water in the Haven) heat and bread will be provided just bring your choice of food to grill/charr/crisp as you desire!

Looking windy which means our SUP activity will be
scuppered therefore I will endeavour to pitch up and get
involved. Good work anyway Martin

Great news Rob,

I think it's too late for you to be sent a sponsor form and sail streamer but I will have some on the day for you anyway, and anyone else wishing to register at the beach????

The BBQ is set for 1pm but it might be on the go at breakfast for the early risers.

Hi Martin,

I registered on the 19th and I'll just donate on the day.
The conditions are looking very good and 3+ metre waves
should make hard for the regulars not to show. I might pop
to Seaton point mid day when Boulmer can't be sailed and
get the most out of the day.

Cya on the weekend.

Boulmer Haven is now a BRONZE venue thank you to all that have registered and I'm hopeful we can beat last years donations at the beach.

The wind forecast is looking good and the reef will give some interesting waves at high tide but also flat water in the Haven as the tide falls.

It will be a little chilly but I have my W4CR fleece to keep me warm, have you got yours

Like your thinking Si

Seaton Point with tide on the push must be done! Anyone
who's not sailed there in NE before, prepare to be amazed -
it's epic!!

A full day of wave riding and flat water freestyle coupled
with BBQ'd food and all for a very worthy cause - life is
sweet!

Good on you Si

I'm sure all those attending on the day will be adding to the coffers as a club effort. GiftAid envelopes will available as W4CR can claim 28% extra from these.

Free sail streamers are up for grabs for all registered and donating sailors.

For those members that are unable to attend on the day, don't feel that you are unable to contribute as you have the opportunity to join in by donating to Si's JustGiving page -

http://www.justgiving.com/SimonSweeney

or my own -

http://www.justgiving.com/martinhaighW4CR

donations on both these pages will be credited to the total fund raising achieved by NWC for W4CR

YEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAA!!

(any other registered sailor with justgiving or donation pages please add your details to this this thread, those that have have already offered support for W4CR via a recognised website, this thread or other threads on this website should deem their support acknowledged and need not add any further comment unless they desire to do so)

Just a quick report to say that there were 4 sailors mad enough to be on the water at Boulmer at 5:30, Matt, John, Si and myself all planing on 5.7m to 6.5m on a very lumpy sea (actually out of my comfort zone, but it had to be done). Paul Hewitt and Andy joined us a little later and also sailed but the wind had eased and the tide was rapidly going out. Matt and John left to join others at Derwent while we waited for the tide to return, by 2pm Si and myself were joned by kev-windysmurf, Richard (from York) and Tdog's son in law on the water. Apologies if I have missed anyone out.

Also in attendance but not sailing were Ally, Andy Freeman, Gavin, Ken Hudson, Nikki & Steve, Peter, Peter Lawson, Steve B & Tdog. In total there were over 40 people at the beach to sail and support those sailing raising over £140 for W4CR in cash donations/sales on the day. The total raised by NWC won't be known until all sponsor and justgiving funds are in, early indications are that we have exceeded the total from last year. If anyone has photos of the day please send them to me at martin_haigh@yahoo.co.uk.

If you were unable to attend yesterday but would still like to contribute to W4CR there are several justgiving pages still open (see above) and I have been instructed by the charity to continue collecting donations until September. Look out for their blue collection tin at a beach near you!

Thanks to all who attended yesterday and those that have supported the NWC event for Windsurfing 4 Cancer Research.

Well done Martin, sorry to interrupt your relaxing lie in on Sunday morning.  Hope i didn't interrupt anything else.  I can honestly say its the coldest sail i have had for quite a while.  Sorry we had to leave you, but had to go and support Derwent and i think we plus one or two others were the only ones there although there were more registered for the day.

Well done Martin for all your hard work. As you know i did dawn to dusk from 5.30 sunrise till 8.00 sunset at Ullswater.  The water was bloody cold!!!  Ice on the windscreen when we woke up at 5am. Sailed with a 7m & a 6.5m. Wind was 15-20mph. Water completely flat like a mill pond. I have raised £170 for a worthy cause. Looking forward to next year already. (Red Tarn, Helvellyn).

Canny walk with all the gear.

Pics to follow.

email from W4CR;

27 May 2010

Sunrise Sunset 2010 - Success!

Your efforts along with all those who organised and joined in Sunrise Sunset 2010 on May 2nd and your many and generous donors have so far raised over £41,000 for W4CR's funds. Many thanks to everyone who contributed! Please pass this on to all who donated or helped.

And we know there's more to come - PLEASE send us any remaining sponsorship money and forms as soon as possible (see instructions on www.W4CR.org home page).

There are still a few Sunrise Sunset 2010 t-shirts available via the website and from some Venue Hosts. They are £10 (+ £2 postage where required) and we will include a free Sunrise Sunset 2010 sticker with each one purchased. Now the better weather has arrived, you should be able to wear one without a wetsuit underneath! So if you haven’t got yours yet, hurry - when they’re gone, they’re gone!

W4CR's Trustees will soon be deciding on the beneficiaries of the funds raised and we would welcome your suggestions of local or regional organisations involved in cancer research, education, support or care which could make good use of a donation from W4CR. Please email your suggestions to martin.lutton@w4cr.org.

In our next Newsletter, you will hear more about the best of Sunrise Sunset 2010, and our plans for 2011 - indeed we'll be seeking feedback from the venues and ideas to make Sunrise Sunset 2011 better still.

Thanks again for supporting W4CR. We hope you will continue to help our good cause and have fun in the process.

Trustees of Windsurfing4CancerResearch (W4CR) - Chairman: David Tuttlebee
Registered charity no. 1128492
