what I've got :
3.6; 4.2; 4.7; 5.3; 5.8
boards :
74l wave
85l wave (PIT AHD)

Does I take my surf ??

If you can, bring all the aforementioned kit. That will get you out in most of the conditions we see here. If you are into light winds then maybe a 100l would be beneficial too.
See you on the water. You will be here for the best part of the year (windsurfing wise) but as Toad says, don't forget your (thick) wetsuit (and a hat!).
Steve.

Hi there, look forward to meeting you on the water. We already have one French guy called Nicholas who sails with us. It will be great to have another..

That's just about the same as my kit, though I bet mine is older! Most people say I should have a bigger sail or board, but then to me it's not exciting, just desperation after a long windless spell.

As mentioned above, you will feel the need for a good wetsuit, the water up here is very cold until the end of March.

Look forward to meeting you,

see you out there!

Do you mean a surf board as well ? if you do then yes bring it, there is a very healthy surf culture at Tynemouth not far from Newcastle.

One other piece of important kit you will need is a set of wheels, most good beaches start 20 miles north of Newcastle.

Plug for the Forth

My usual boards are 75l and 85l, I sailed the latter yesterday at Longniddry with 4.5m sail.

Watch XCweather, when it forcasts 18kts SW or W    GO!

Salut Alex,

A+

Thanks for all your answers
I've got a 5.3mm rip curl core Viper, I hope that will be enough. Is the air as cold as the water ?

For nicolas (but in English) :
Ok if I've got to make a choice I'll take only my 85l. I sail in la ROchelle - Isle of Ré
have a look at my site http://snowalex.free.fr

I come by car with all my material... are there other windsurfers in Newcastle Upon Tyne ?

Also I'm looking for an accomodation in Newcastle, do you know something with a garage ? I'm also looking for a job as barman or an other thing during my trip, can you help me ?

ok , thanks again, see you

Snowalex, That is a nice website. There are some very good pictures on there. Did you take them all?

My French is not so good, I have to look at dictionary every two or three words.

Great site though.

The water temperature gets as low as 6deg C, air temperatures usually average out at about 7 deg C, obviously with some 10 -13 deg days and some -5-6 days. The hardy will sail on the colder days, I have been known to brave 4 deg and snow with a good northerly swell, but generally limit my sailing to 6 deg and above. I have been out several times surfing in minus temps...no problem.

There is storage space at the university club for windsurfing gear, most student accommodations do not have garages. (Try www.stud-lets.co.uk or a search for student lets newcastle upon tyne will bring up more info)

The university have an employment section, which have jobs for students which will fit in around work schedules, and the employers using the scheme are very good. Bar work may be a little difficult just after Christmas, as staffing is often reduced after the holiday period.

Most of the windsurfers / surfers tend to live outside Newcastle, but the road and communication system here is excellent so distance doesn't cause a problem.

Hope this helps, look forward to seeing you

Hi again
my trip is now on preparation but I think about coming by car only on april during the holidays and to come by plane on the end of january
at the moment I don't have any accommodation and it seems too difficult to come in Newcastle with a car full of material because of risk of robering
perhaps If I come with my windsurfing material on april don't I miss all good sessions or not??
I don't know what to do because I can't take the risk of leting the material in car... any solution ???

does matt birkett still use this forum? he may be able to help as he has or had somerthign to do with newcastle uni windsurf club.  If you cant get hold of him then ring the newcastle uni switchboard and ask for the student union clubs and societies clerk (i cant remember her name anne something i think), talk to her about who is running the newcastle uni windsurfign club and wether they still have storage space at the uni that you could put your kit in until you find a place to live

Unfortunately the university's "sports store" has been filled with theatre stage props and storage space is very limited.  I don't keep anything there now as sometimes you can't even get through the door!

http://www.4hotels.co.uk/uk/hotels/whites-hotel.html is in Jesmond which is where a lot of students and young professionals live.  I used to live around there when I was a student and for a while after - good bars and pretty lively.   39 quid a night according to the website.
