Early heads up to maximise participation!!

First windy / wavey weekend after Easter (provided it
doesn't clash with anything NEWS/SUP booking).

We already have interest from as far away as Aberdeen and
South Yorkshire so lets hope more local windsurfers can
make it this year! We may increase the number of
categories to cater for less capable/different types
sailors e.g. speed run / racing / freestyle at the Budle
Bay or even Derwent (subject to interest from them)

We should be able to secure Budle Farm as a camping
location (if we avoid school & bank holidays) which is
well within staggerable distance from Bamburgh so there
will definitely be scope to partake in BEERS!

I will endeavour to rustle up another fantastic prize
fund that will be raffled off amongst all taking part so
you don't have to win to walk off with a harness, wetsuit
etc.

Once again the event will be done on a cost recovery
basis so we'd hope to keep entry fees below £40 which is
still cheap for a 2 day event!

Obviously it's a lot organise so any volunteers happy to
get involved with judging, on the day logistics etc
please send me a PM or email to enquiries at boardskillz
co uk.

If Gavin or anyone else skilled in the art of snapping or
videoing could get involved we'd be really grateful as
decent media is vital to help promote the event moving
forward! We got some fantastic shots last time that did
the rounds on Facebook ,Boards/Mpora and Boardseeker
which gave a relatively small event some real kudos
nationally.

Any local businesses interested in sponsoring the event
in some shape or form drop me a line with what you have
in mind. If anyone's feeling flush I dare say we could
attract interest from a Pro fleet (with a decent prize
fund) notching up the event's credibility and no doubt
generating column inches in local/national media
coverage.

I'll post again as a plan starts to take shape.

Stay tuned for the stoke....

Nice work Oracle! By the look of your wave riding it's
clearly paid off

I'm in.
I suggest you give a provisional date though to allow people to plan
for it.

Yep - plan it around the best tides.  If you want a decent turn out you can't wait for a good forecast I'm afraid as that is too late and people are likely to have made other plans.

Better to have it planned and postpone it than decide to go for it only giving a few days notice.

Nature of our sport unfortunately.

Nice one Joe. I'm in. Sounds like a good idea to run a speed event (or similar) in the bay as well as that opens it up to everyone, wave heed or otherwise.
Some of the fellas in the BWA were interested when I showed them the pics in Tiree last year. I'll send s link to Craig and Russ- they might be able to get a South coast crew together.

Dependant on dates I'm hopefully heading back from the south coast for this as it would be great to sail the 'home' breaks for the first time properly in over 10 years (aside from that stupidly windy/ cold day over Christmas Stevey!!) So happy to give anyone a lift up from the SE if they're intersted but are put off by the drive.

richie - i think the opposite, people will come on a good forecast, especially if they have a long travel and are dedicated to the sport. the nature of our sport is you cant name a day and expect the right conditions. you have to be flexible and go to it when it is there. that is the nature of the sport. depends how big it becomes. it joes choice at the end of the day, its his baby.

We'll have to agree to disagree there then. I've mentioned the event to
a few people and the first question they ask is, 'when is it?'

I'd definitely like to take part and personally would ring fence potential
dates to make sure I was available should conditions be good.
Weekends are precious though, and if something else comes up I'm
not about to refuse it on the off chance there might be a wave slam.

As you said, it's Joe's call. I can't think of another windsurfing event on
the planet that are arranged on a 'sometime after Easter' basis.

Having attended the Tiree Wave Classic the other year
when the wind didn't pitch up, I was left feeling 'well
that was a waste of time!' so the whole point of the Slam
is that it entrants get guaranteed wind and waves (the
two vital ingredients in a wave sailing competition!)

Yes Richie, I take your point about providing some
potential dates so people can juggle their weekend
commitments but I'd rather run the event with limited
numbers and solid conditions than with 100 sailors and no
wind.

Steve C - I think it's a good idea to broaden the event's
remit so as to cater for all levels / other disciplines
although I'll need some volunteers familiar with race
type events to assist with judging and on the day bits
and pieces.

Oracle - I think trying to plan the event around the best
tides is a very good idea. Whether we'll get the wind as
well we'll only know that 2-3 days before.

Richie P - be great to see you and stirling effort on the
potentially 7-8hr drive! I dare say there might be a
couple of other sailors keen to take up your offer of a
lift.

As far as plugging the event I'm sure a few of my trade
contacts will definitely help but word or mouth, social
media all help so please paste the thread's link into any
relevant forums, websites, personal walls and let's get
the stoke going!

The new Boardskillz website is just about to go live so
in the meantime stay tuned either here or at

OK guys, just about to put a news item on Boards /
Boardseeker about the intended Slam.

As previously intimated....first windy/wavy weekend after
Easter holidays (provided it doesn't clash with NEWS or
planned BWA events)

In terms of judging, we're hopeful of securing a PWA
judge which should mean a dedicated feature on Boards.

Alongside relevant media publicity let's all spread the
word and get the stoke out there.

Prize fund donations confirmed from Boardskillz, Zero
Gravity, Pryde Group and K4 again for 2012. If anyone
else wants to get involved with the prize fund we have
options for sponsoring competition vests, trophies and
give aways for competitor bags. No donation is too small
so put your thinking caps on

Gavin - would you like to be event photographer this
time?

Anyone else who might like to film the proceedings, Nick
and I both have access to editing facilities so should be
able to produce a short film to help with future
promotion.

In terms of camping options I will speak to Druridge Bay
and Budle Farm so they're also at Defcon 2

I urge everyone to support the Waveslam, even if you just spectate
and come to the social or camp over it all helps to build on the
humble beginnings of last year.

I'll be up for the weekend and camping if I'm not commited to work.

Hopefully a few of us from Yorkshire will be up.

Some MOB practice on Tuesday would be nice, although Redcar's probably got it just now.
